Johnson to Speak at Rockwell Automation Event 2013/11/07/johnson-to-speak-at-rockwell-automation-event/ Thu, 07 Nov 2013 09:01:51 +0000 http://laurentest.com/?p=378 ABILENE, TEXAS, November 7, 2013: Ron Johnson, Executive Vice President of Lauren Engineers & Constructors, has been invited to speak at Rockwell Automation’s Process Solutions User Group in Houston, Texas on November 11 and 12.  Johnson will discuss Lauren’s Godawari Green Energy Solar Plant in India, which used Rockwell’s process solutions to ensure a timely and effective launch of power to the grid.

The Godawari Solar Project includes over 161,000 mirrors, combining for a total of 120 loops, which can heat 1,400 metric tons of heat transfer fluid.  The project is situated on 400 acres in India’s Rajasthan state, and provides 122,000 MWh of power to the national grid annually as part of Phase I of India’s National Solar Mission.  A harsh desert climate, heavy dust, and heavy rain made environmental considerations crucial during the construction process.

Lauren was faced with the challenge of integrating both the solar field controls and the power block/steam turbine generator.  Rockwell was able to handle both sides of this challenge and could offer a viable, full-scope solution to meet Lauren’s project needs.  The team used innovative ideas to overcome both technical and logistical challenges, and achieved success when Godawari became the first utility-scale solar plant in India to deliver power to the grid.

Johnson has over 40 years’ experience in engineering and construction, specializing in heavy industrial products in power, process, petrochemical and oil and gas. More information can be found about the Rockwell Automation Process Solutions User Group conference at www.rockwellautomation.com/events.

LaurenSaxon Site Crew Achieves 130,000 Safe Work Hours 2013/10/10/laurensaxon-site-crew-achieves-130000-safe-work-hours/ Thu, 10 Oct 2013 09:04:52 +0000 http://laurentest.com/?p=380 ABILENE, TEXAS, October 10, 2013: LaurenSaxon, a joint venture between Lauren Engineers and Constructors, Inc. and Saxon Construction, Inc. recently celebrated a noteworthy safety milestone at its Port Arthur, Texas job site, where an ethylene furnace is being built under the responsibility of Linde Engineering North America, Inc. for BASF Total Petrochemicals, LLC.  The crew at the site has achieved over 130,000 work hours with zero recordable safety incidents, thanks to employee dedication and a worksite culture that emphasizes safety above all else.

The crew has worked through a hot gulf coast summer with eight successful heavy critical lifts, three successful heavy equipment lifts, and a safely executed top-out of the main structure.  As part of the site’s precautionary measures, LaurenSaxon implemented a site heat stress management policy and created five cool-down stations using electrolyte frozen pops, mist sprayers, fans, and air conditioners. These stations helped the crew avoid any kind of heat stress incident.

An incentive program through LaurenSaxon provides rewards and prizes for individual crew members caught doing exceptionally good deeds in regards to safety.  The client for the ethylene furnace, BASF, has also rewarded the crew for their devotion to safety at the site with two appreciation dinners. “Attention to safety is so deeply engrained in our culture, it’s just a way of life for our crew.  They take safety very seriously and it shows,” says Jerry Price, Site Manager.  LaurenSaxon has just under 200 personnel on site and expects to finish the ethylene furnace project in December of 2013.

Lauren Receives Third Consecutive STEP Diamond Award from ABC 2013/05/03/lauren-receives-third-consecutive-step-diamond-award-from-abc/ Fri, 03 May 2013 09:19:41 +0000 http://laurentest.com/?p=386 ABILENE, TX, May 3, 2013: For the third year in a row, Lauren Engineers & Constructors has earned the STEP Diamond Award from Associated Builders and Contractors.  This award is presented annually to a small group of contractors who, through a highly competitive selection process, are chosen based on their ability to consistently deliver industry-leading safety results.

ABC’s Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) awards recognize member companies based on 20 key elements of contractor safety programs, such as management commitment, pre-planning for safety on jobsites, safety training and resources committed to safety.  Pat Dunwoody, Vice President of Education for ABC, states that companies who earn the STEP Diamond Award demonstrate “injury recordable and lost time rates lower than the national average.”

Since the inception of the STEP Awards system, less than seven percent of applicants have been presented the Diamond Award, which confirms Lauren’s status as one of the industry’s safest contractors.  Lauren takes pride in both the company’s rigorous safety program and its employees’ devotion to safety in the workplace.  These high standards have helped Lauren log over 8.5 million manhours during a five-year span with no lost time injuries.

The STEP Awards will be presented at a ceremony for members in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 20.

Lauren Reaches Five Years with No Lost Time Injuries 2013/04/30/lauren-reaches-five-years-with-no-lost-time-injuries/ Tue, 30 Apr 2013 09:22:22 +0000 http://laurentest.com/?p=391 ABILENE, TX, April 30, 2013: In the first quarter of 2013, Lauren Engineers & Constructors reached an uncommon safety milestone: five years with no lost time injuries.  This significant achievement confirms Lauren’s reputation as one of the safest companies to work for across the entire construction industry and is a direct reflection of Lauren’s unwavering commitment to health and safety excellence.

OSHA defines a lost time injury as an incident or injury that causes a worker to miss the subsequent calendar workday, and the Bureau of Labor statistics recently reported that the construction industry average is 2.1 cases involving days away from work per 100 full-time workers, per year.

Lauren’s direct hire craft base over the last five years includes over 3,600 craft professionals employed at sites throughout the United States.  Managing the complexities of a craft force this size is challenging and requires a vigilant safety effort at all offices and jobsites.  This safety approach at Lauren has created a safe work culture, embodied from the very top and lived out on our jobsites,  which  has allowed the company to consistently meet its primary safety goal: to help every worker leave work safely and injury-free, every single day.

Todd Meek, Lauren’s Corporate Safety Director, commented, “While we’re incredibly proud of our organization and the commitment it has taken from everyone to achieve this safety milestone, this does not come by surprise.  Our core value everywhere we work is creating an environment free of recognizable hazards, and our employees’ devotion to that is continuously proven.  The results of this safety commitment speak for themselves: We have worked more than 8.5 million man-hours injury-free over the past five years.”

Lauren’s goal of zero injuries is backed by a comprehensive safety program modeled after behavior-based safety standards in which all employees are called to take personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their coworkers.  Site and task-specific training, as well as daily collaborative safety meetings, help to solidify Lauren’s safety culture and provide the safest possible work environments at all offices and jobsites.

Support from CEO Cleve Whitener, as well as recognition programs for outstanding safety performance, have helped engrain a steadfast commitment to safety across the organization. The dedication to safety from each employee has not only saved Lauren and its clients time and money, but has also helped save lives.
